We invite you to join the Ulwazi Research Program as volunteer.

You will get the opportunity to participate in the day-to-day management of a Big-Five reserve and in ongoing research projects. Through our partnership with Africa Nature Training you will also learn a variety of bush skills including plant and animal identification, tracking and star-gazing in southern skies. The work is varied, the days are full and interesting, and the knowledge that you acquire at Ulwazi will serve your life and career well. If you are looking to gain wildlife and conservation experience, are a gap year student or someone who wants to contribute to conservation then this is the experience for you!

Two- and Four-week Programme options

We have created a two-week programme to suit people who have limited time available and a four-week programme for anyone who is less time constrained. Both programmes are designed to expose the volunteer to various facets of African wildlife and game reserve management. You will be involved in the practicalities of Big-5 monitoring, data collection and research whilst learning about wildlife management and ecological principles. In addition to supporting research goals on the reserve, you will engage in habitat and reserve management activities that are part of Thanda Safari’s ongoing conservation programmes. If you have an interest in photography you will have the opportunity to attend a photography workshop run by Thanda’s resident photographer.

If, having signed up for the two-week programme, you find your time with us so enjoyable that you don’t want to go home, it is possible to extend your stay for an additional two weeks.
