We invite you to join the Ulwazi Research Programme as a Volunteer Research Assistant or Research Intern. You will participate in a range of ongoing and novel research projects and in the day-to-day management of the reserve. The work is varied, the days are full and interesting and the research skills and the knowledge that you gain at Ulwazi will serve your life and career well.

We offer programmes for a wide range of Research Assistants. Whether you are an undergraduate or postgraduate student wanting to pursue research and/or gain work experience in the wildlife and conservation field, or if you are on a gap year or holidaying in Africa and wanting to contribute to conservation, we have a programme that is suitable for you.

Please note that research assistants may stay additional weeks on any of the below programmes. Shortening the programme times is not recommended as they are specifically designed and scheduled. However, please contact us if you have a particular requirement and we will endeavour to accommodate you.

Individual programme costs are listed below; additional weeks are charged at the standard fee of R6,500 per week for each programme.

8 week – Wildlife Research Programme

This programme is ideal for A-level and university students who are studying wildlife and conservation related subjects, such as Zoology, Ecology and Nature Conservation.

It offers students a thorough understanding of our data collection and research approaches on the reserve. We encourage students to undertake their own research project during their stay here to gain the practical experience and knowledge in experimental design and the importance of it. For students at university level these projects could act as potential pilot or long term studies for dissertations and thesis with numerous research opportunities at your fingertips. The Ulwazi and Thanda Wildlife team, along with fellow students will be on hand to assist with such projects, their analysis and presenting your findings in a scientific report format. Although this is not mandatory we advise on taking advantage of this and maximising your time with us, which will leave you with a sense of achievement and a better understanding of research methodology.
